Jig: Lupercalia
Gigue: Lupercalia
Lupercalia was a Roman festivity held on February 15th, traditionally associated with warding off evil, renewing the city, and bringing vitality to its people.
The melodic material is drawn from Jean-Baptiste Lully’s opera Cadmus et Hermione—a practice in transcription and melodic development.
This piece is written for strings, harpsichord, woodwinds, and tambourine.
