Toccata and Fugue in G Minor, “Campanile”

This work is inspired by Johann Sebastian Bach’s organ compositions, particularly his Toccata and Fugue in D Minor. It reimagines the piece in G minor and carries the subtitle “The Bells.” According to legend, after completing a composition in Leipzig in 1723, Bach encountered three ethereal muses who appeared from the church tower bells. They revealed themselves as guardians of the belfry and expressed their admiration for his music by ringing the bells in gratitude. At dawn, the figures dissolved into shadows, returning to their eternal duty of guarding the tower. Deeply moved, Bach was said to have drawn fresh inspiration for this piece.

As a composer, I am especially drawn to the sound aesthetics of 8-bit timbres, alongside my passion for classical music, particularly the Baroque era. Bach’s works fascinate me for their sudden interplay and fusion of independent voices, creating structures that feel simultaneously mathematical, monumental, and transcendent. This composition draws inspiration from Bach’s contrapuntal energy, while intentionally highlighting expressive contrast and maintaining the liveliness of 8-bit textures. In many ways, the brightness and resonance of 8-bit timbres resonate with the tonal qualities of the organ, making the two surprisingly kindred in spirit.

Written for organ, this work seeks to bridge Baroque grandeur with the playful vibrancy of digital sound worlds.
